Hottest Beauty Trends For AW15

Today's post is a guest post by Amy Mia Goldsmith. When I was contacted by Amy and she mentioned the topic I knew straight away I wanted to feature it on my blog. I love sussing out the different makeup trends that appear each season. As we enter into Autumn and Winter here's a look at some of the current trends written by Amy.

Hello girls,

It seems that it is the right time to gather the impressions of the standout looks that marched the runway this month. Although haute couture is not in store for most of us, this autumn/winter season is all about turning your face into a canvas and making a statement with bold makeup. From graphic eyeliner, to glittering metallic shadows, to hot red lipstick, there are so many ways you can make it happen.

Check out the latest beauty trends of the season and get inspired.

1. Something Blue

One thing is certain: blue is the new black this season. From baby blue, and icy white, to bolder aqua marine and cobalt blue, using an all blue palette is an imperative. The color has a mysterious ethereal aura surrounding it. Vibrant cobalt dominated at Maison Margiela and Jean Paul Gaultier fashion shows, where ladies were sent onto the catwalk with fabric-like swatches, exaggerated cat-eyes and mariniere stripes on top and bottom lash lines. The lesson of the season is: if you are lacking boldness, compensate it with some bold blue hues.

2. Metallic eyes

This season is all about the eyes, with a focus on opacity and shape. If you wish to make a clear statement, luckily for you, metallics are back in a big way. They were all over the runways. Shimmers, sparkles, sequins, they come in all shapes and forms – from soft shimmers to reflective party eyes. Smokey eyes don’t have to be all about black. Molten metallics are equally steamy, but they will give your eyes a much fresher look.If you are brave enough, try the eye-catching gold foil lids, mixed with smoky black. Don’t be afraid to combine warm and cool hues. Or just draw a gold, bronze or silver line across the lower lids.

3. Red lipstick - now & forever

Red lipstick made a huge comeback after being away for a few seasons. It is not a revolutionary idea, but classic red lips always deserve to be mentioned. It comes in a range of colors, from brick-red to tangerine seen at Kaelen show, to oxblood lips and darker hues at Dolce &Gabbana. In matte or glossy, everyone can find their favorite. So, if you haven’t been bold enough to wear it so far, stand out this autumn with some slight cherry hue.

4. Skin is In

A glowing complexion is always in, but this season it is a must. At Calvin Klein, Pucci, Valentino, Nina Ricci, and many more, they went for a well-nourished look. The fresh skin effect was achieved with face oils, concealers, and highlighters. So, the best fashion advice for this autumn and winter might be to drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, and invest in quality skincare products. Skin care products from SkinCeuticals contain quality moisturizers, soothing gels and balms that will help you achieve this. Aussies, you can get  Skinceuticals skincare products from Alive Skin+Hair.

5. Plaits for Rainy Days

The frizz-taming power of plaits is appealing to all of us, and now that the style has become  haute couture, we have one more reason to start plaiting. We saw them at Fendi, Stella McCartney, Pucci, Marc Jacobs, Bluemarine – everywhere. There are so many ways to wear them. Whether it’s a halo braid, fishtail, plaited chignon, or simple twisted tresses, the catwalk has made its statement – plaits are back! They have already found their way to the red carpet as well. Make them as neat or as messy as you wish and you will still be super sophisticated, as  boho style is in this season.

Finally, we can all feel haute couture. Which autumn beauty trend is your favourite?

Organic Beauty Week | Antipodes Hosanna H2O Intensive Skin-Plumping Serum

Antipodes Hosanna H2O Intensive Skin-Plumping Serum

This week is Organic Beauty Week organised by the Soil Association charity. If you aren’t aware of Soil Association already, below explains a bit about what they do.

“At Soil Association, we believe in educating and empowering consumers to shop for organic products so they know and understand exactly what they’re buying so we are launching our Campaign for Clarity, calling on brands to be honest and open in their claims and organic content and inviting consumers to join the campaign and fight for a better understanding of organic beauty and what it all actually means”.

I’m talking about Organic Beauty Week on my blog as I feel quite strongly about brands that possibly mislead customers and state they are organic when actually a lot of their ingredients aren’t organic or natural. The rules on whether or not a brand can call themselves organic can be very confusing to understand so I think this Campaign for Clarity is much needed!

I was recently introduced to Antipodes, a natural skincare brand from New Zealand. They are certified organic meaning all of their products use between 70 - 95% organic ingredients. In addition to this, all of their products feature full recyclable bottles and biodegradable card. Having read up about Antipodes I have been really impressed (and apparently Cara Delevingne is a fan!) so I thought it would be perfect to mention them during Organic Beauty Week.

For the last few weeks I have been incorporating the Antipodes Hosanna H2O Skin Plumping Serum* into my skincare routine. This is a water-charged and oil –free serum which quenches thirsty skin by hydrating the skin cells. It is plumping, smoothing, softening with the aim of improving the skins appearance over time.  I suffer with combination skin so it can be both oily and dry in different areas (very annoying) so the fact that this is oil free and hydrating is the perfect formula for me.
Antipodes Hosanna H2O Intensive Skin-Plumping Serum
I love that all of Antipodes products contain completely natural ingredients and this serum features vinanza grape and mamaku black fern – both of which I had never heard of until now but they sound great and aim to work together to make the skin look healthy and plump. The serum comes in a bottle with a squeezey tube which allows you to pick up the exact amount of product you want and drop onto the face. It has an almost herbal scent which is absolutely gorgeous and reminded me of being in a spa – very relaxing! It’s perfect to apply in the night time before bed. After using this serum for the first time I instantly noticed how soft my skin felt, it definitely is hydrating and I think it would be perfect for anyone that suffers with dry skin. I also mention quite a lot on my blog that my skin is sensitive, so I love the fact that this contains all natural ingredients which are kind to the skin.

Antipodes Hosanna H2O Intensive Skin-Plumping Serum
This serum has been scientifically proven to boost type 1 collagen production by up to 72%. A quick explanation if you aren’t sure what this means… Collagen is a type of protein found in our bodies which make up the structure for skin, tendons, joints, cartilage etc. There are more than 20 types of collagen but types 1, 2 and 3 are found mainly in the skin. When we get older, collagen levels begin to decline and this is what causes wrinkles and saggy areas around the neck for example. Collagen supplements are used to increase collagen levels in the skin. So it is quite impressive that this serum has been proven to boost collagen levels. You might be thinking that this is a product best to use as you get older and not now, but I believe there’s absolutely no harm in using anti-aging products whenever you want as they always have great benefits for the skin regardless of your age. The main reason I like this serum so much is because of how hydrating and softening it is to the skin.

I will definitely be continuing to use this serum in my evening skin care routine, it is perfect for a quick pamper session and I love the results. It retails at £28.99 on Feel Unique which does seem quite expensive for this small bottle but a little product definitely goes a long way!

Have you heard of Antipodes before? Does this sound like product you would want to try?

NIP + FAB Kale Fix Range

NIP + FAB Kale Fix Range
NIP + FAB Kale Fix Range

NIP + FAB is a brand which is constantly being raved about, I have seen lots of great feedback about their products online and even Kylie Jenner and Millie Mackintosh are known to be fans! Until now I have only tried the self tan gel from NIP + FAB which I absolutely loved. I have wanted to try more from NIP + FAB for a while so when I was offered the chance to review the new Kale Fix range I jumped at the chance.

Over the last couple of years kale seems to be popping up everywhere – it has definitely become one of the trendiest vegetables and it is clear why. There are so many benefits to this superfood – it is full of essential vitamins A, C and K, iron, potassium, it is low in calories, has zero fat and lots of protein.

What I wasn’t aware of is that not only is kale good for your insides it also has some great benefits for your skin too. Vitamin A helps repair the tissues under your skin, Vitamin K can get rid of dark circles under your eyes and Vitamin C helps prevent damage caused by the sun and premature aging of the skin. Kale has all three of these packed into it!

It is now easy to see why some beauty brands are starting to incorporate Kale into their products when there are so many benefits. NIP + FAB are the latest to get involved and have put together a Kale Fix range which will be released in October. The range includes a Kale Fix Moisturiser, a Kale Fix Clay Mask and Kale Fix Makeup Removing Pads. The main ingredient is of course kale but what I really like about this range it that it also includes other natural ingredients as well like watercress, almond oil, aloe vera and shea butter.

The Kale Fix range claims to protect against free radical damage as well as soften and hydrate dry skin with its gentle natural ingredients. This to me suggests it will great for sensitive skin and as I have quite sensitive skin I couldn’t wait to try it out. I have been using these products as part of my skin care routine for a couple of weeks now and I can’t wait to share my thoughts!  The first thing I have to say is how amazing each of these products smell. It reminded me slightly of cucumber- they are all so refreshing.
NIP + FAB Kale Fix moisturiser
Kale Fix Moisturiser £19.95* - This is a moisturiser which can be used daily to help soften and comfort dry skin. It contains kale, almond oil, aloe vera and shea butter. I absolutely love all these ingredients, they are all natural and moisturise the skin well. I often buy products with shea butter in, it’s one of my favourite ingredients in a moisturiser as it makes my skin so soft. Although I don’t tend to suffer with extremely dry skin I do experience it in some areas such as around my nose and forehead, so this moisturiser is really useful. I have been applying it after removing my makeup at night and it makes my skin feel so soft and soothed.
Kale Fix Clay Mask £12.95* - I have tried out quite a lot of different face masks and until now my favourite was The Body Shop Seaweed Clay Mask. I already know I love clay face masks so I was interested to see what a clay face mask with kale was going to be like! As I have quite sensitive skin I find some face masks dry my skin or leave it slightly red and sting a bit when it’s on. I was really impressed to discover that this kale face mask did none of these things. NIP + FAB state this face mask “works to draw away impurities without drying the skin. The addition of an advanced moisture complex helps to restore the skin’s natural barrier function to help regulate water loss to increase hydration for the skin to leave it feeling touchably soft with a fresh glow”. In my opinion it does its job well! £12.95 might seem a lot of a product of this size but a little definitely goes a long way so I think this will last awhile. It also contains witch hazel which I know helps fight ache and removes excess oil so it is perfect for my oily/combination skin.
NIP + FAB Kale Fix makeup remover pads
Kale Fix Make-up Removing Pads £12.95* - Out of the three products in the Kale Fix range this is the one I was slightly skeptical about. This is because I struggle to find any makeup removers that don’t sting my eyes as they are quite sensitive.  NIP + FAB say they are gentle enough to use around the eyes so I was interested to see if this was true. I have to say I was quite impressed, I have used them to remove my makeup a few times and I don’t find it stings my eyes. If you get it into the eye it sting slightly but it’s fine around the area which is better than others I have tried. As well as removing makeup these pads also moisturise the skin – they contain kale and watercress extracts so are full of goodness and my skin definitely felt soft after using them.
Over all I am really impressed with the products in NIP + FAB’s Kale Fix Range. I love that they all contain natural ingredients and are kind to sensitive skin – my skin feels very soft after using each one. My favourite is definitely the face mask which I know I will be using for a long time.
If you are interested in this range from NIP + FAB it will be available to purchase from October. You can sign up to the waiting list here to be the first to get your hands on them. You can also buy the full range as bundle for £35 which is an absolute bargain if you are interested in trying them all.
Does this sound like something you would use? What are your favourite NIP + FAB products?

Seventeen Makeup | First Impressions

Seventeen Makeup
Seventeen Makeup
Seventeen Makeup

I have to admit Seventeen is a brand of makeup I haven’t really paid much attention to in Boots over the last few years. I do remember it being popular when I was in school – it was definitely cool to have at the time but I think I left it behind as I grew older and discovered new brands. What I had apparently completed missed is that Seventeen has had a complete brand overhaul, gone are the days of ‘17’ being their logo. I recently received this lovely package full of Seventeen goodies and I was instantly impressed when I saw the products, they have seriously upped their game with their design and packaging and I absolutely love it.

A review of Seventeen Makeup
As I haven’t tried Seventeen since before their redesign I was so excited to try all these products out and see if the quality matches their new sophisticated design. I was sent five products from their makeup range which I have been using for the last couple of weeks, keep reading to find out what I think of them so far.
This is probably the one that excited me the most as I absolutely love contouring my face and experimenting with different products to do so. I recently purchased the RealTechniques Bold Metals Flat Contour brush which I have been using to apply this bronzer to the hollows of my cheeks and down the sides of my nose and it is perfect for it. It is a lovely shade of bronzer, not orange at all and is matte which I find best for contouring. The lighter powder can be used to highlight the top of your cheekbones, centre of the forehead and centre of the nose. As the lighter powder is matte too I have been applying some MAC Soft and Gentle on top to give a glow and I absolutely love the effect of using them together. This set also comes with a picture guide of how to contour and has a lovely big mirror inside. Little extras like this are a great bonus when the price is only £5.99 – it’s got a big thumbs up from me!

I absolutely love shimmer bricks, I had the Bobbi Brown one but it ran out a while ago so it’s great to try out a new one. Shimmer bricks are great as they have so many different uses. This Seventeen shimmer brick can be used as a bronzer to add glow to the cheeks, or you can use the individual shades to contour and highlight. You could even use the shades as eyeshadows so it’s really versatile, and all for £4.99 which is great value. The lighter shades are my favourite, I have been using them to highlight my brow bone.

I have to admit the primer is probably my least favourite, it’s not that there’s anything wrong with the product it’s just not personally something I would be likely to use often. Seventeen state this is a three way primer which can be used to prime, added to foundation or applied onto cheekbones as a highlighter. As I have oily/combination skin I like to keep my primer and foundation as matte as possible so wouldn’t be using it for that. However I imagine if you have dry skin and like an added glow this would be a great product. I have used this a couple of times as a highlighter and it is great, a little goes a long way and it brightens the skin really well. My favourite way to use this product is to highlight the brow bone and as an eyeshadow primer.

A review of Seventeen makeup brow kit
I’ve only tried this out a couple of times so far and I already know I’ll be getting a lot of use out of it. What you get in this kit is really impressive for the small price of £5.99. It comes with a wax, a powder, a highlighter, a pencil and a brush. I really like the wax and powder, it only comes in one shade which is quite dark so might not be the best if you are blonde, however I personally quite like to colour my eyebrows darker than my hair so it’s perfect for me. The pencil is great to when I’m in more of a rush I use this, plus it’s the perfect handbag size for a quick brow touch up! This kit also comes with a handy guide showing you how to use this kit which is  a great bonus.
This mascara is my absolute favourite out of them all which was quite a shock to me. I have been using Benefit They’re Real for a while and nothing has really compared to it until now, which I actually can’t believe I’m saying! The quality of this mascara is really great, it adds lots of volume and length and doesn’t seem to clump at all. The tip of the brush is slightly smaller which allows more accuracy when applied to smaller lashes in the corners, this is a big plus for me. I have honestly used this mascara everyday since I received it and I’m really impressed, I can definitely say I’ll be purchasing this when it runs out.

Left to right - Primer, Shimmer Brick, Contour Kit

You can probably tell already I am so impressed with all of these Seventeen makeup pieces. After not trying Seventeen for a few years I can now honestly say it is now becoming one of my favourite brands for reasonably priced makeup. The packaging gives a high end feel and the quality is very impressive. I am already reaching for these almost everyday now (especially the mascara and contour kit) and I'm sure I will be for a long time.

Have you tried Seventeen makeup? What are you favourite pieces?

August Favourites

It makes me sad thinking that it is now officially the end of summer. I love summer and I don’t really feel like we have had much of one this year! I have high hopes that we might have some sun throughout September as we sometimes do but who knows… Anyway onto my August favourites. This was quite an easy one for me as there are so many things I have been loving this month which I can’t wait to share with you all.

Real Techniques Bold Metals Flat Contour Brush £22 – Ever since the Bold Metals collection was released I have been dying to try it, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to justify the expensive price tag of the brushes. After recently noticing they were on offer in Boots I just couldn’t resist buying the Flat Contour brush as I read some really good reviews about this one. I absolutely love the design of the brush, it is the most gorgeous shade of gold and I love the unique pointy end. The quality of the brush is amazing - it is so soft and I find it the perfect shape and size to contour my face. I use this brush almost every day now and I’m so glad I bought it. The brushes are still on offer in Boots at the moment with 25% off if you are interested!

Crown Brush Deluxe Crease Brush* £3.69 – I received this brush in my goody bag from the Big Blogger Conference. I was quite excited that it was a crease brush of all brushes as I actually have been looking for a new one. As soon as I used it I loved it! The shape is perfect, it is quite thin and long so it works perfectly for blending in the crease area. It is really soft as well which is always a big plus for me, I hate it when a brush feels rough on the eyelid. This is the first brush I have tried from Crown Brush and I’m really impressed. They are very reasonably priced as well - I definitely want to try more now!

Mac Lip Liner ‘Talking Points’ – £12.50 It’s only recently I have started using lip liners and I can’t believe what I’ve been missing. I used to struggle with them as I sometimes have dry lips and matte lipsticks tend to be quite long wearing anyway. I’m not sure what changed my mind but I decided to purchase a couple of MAC lip liners with some of the money I got for my birthday a few weeks ago and one of them was this gorgeous shade of pink called ‘Talking Points’. I absolutely love the bright pink colour and it goes with so many of my pink lipsticks. I have noticed how much it massively increases the wear time and it is amazing! I don’t really find it that drying either as long as you make sure your lips are moisturised.

Maybelline Eraser Eye – £7.99 I have been wanting to try this concealer for a while now after reading so many good reviews about it. I decided to purchase it a couple of weeks ago in Boots and I have been using it every day since. I went for the shade ‘light’ as I wanted to use it as highlighter and I absolutely love it. It is very brightening so it’s the perfect under eye concealer. I really like the applicator as well, I’ve never used anything like that before and it works really well.

Gifting Lounge Moroccan Tea Light Holder – £3 Lauren from Blonde Vision has recently opened an online shop called The Gifting Lounge and she kindly gave me this pink tea light holder from her shop for my birthday. I absolutely love the colour and I can see myself getting a lot of use out of it throughout autumn and winter – I always have candles going to make my room feel cosy! There are lots of colours available and they are only £3 each online.

Ohh Deer Notebook*– £4.95 Ohh Deer kindly provided one of these notebooks to every blogger at the Big Blogger Conference. I absolutely love the design, it is such a pretty marble effect and they were so popular at the event with everyone using them to take notes in from the workshops. I’m always writing notes and lists for everything so I know I’ll get a lot of use out of this – it’s so lightweight as well so perfect for carrying around in my hangbag.
